The cost of this project was estimated to be $636,100. Originally, the BCWMC ordered that $2,262 of the project cost was to be funded from the BCWMC's Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Closed Project Account, up to $34,800 was to be funded by the BCWMC's 2009 ad valorem tax levy collected via Hennepin County in 2010, and up to $601,300 was to be funded by the BCWMC's 2010 ad valorem tax levy collected via Hennepin County in 2011.

The BCWMC was awarded Clean Water Fund grant monies in the amount of $147,750 for this project, and the project also was awarded a Hennepin County grant in the amount of $135,000. Because of these funding awards, in April 2011, the BCWMC approved an amendment ordering that the project would be funded in the amount of $147,750 through the Clean Water Fund grant, $135,000 through the county grant, $2,262 from the BCWMC's CIP Closed Project Account, $32,538 from the BCWMC's 2009 ad valorem tax levy collected via Hennepin County in 2010, and $286,300 from the BCWMC's 2010 ad valorem tax levy collected via Hennepin County in 2011. The BCWMC finalized reimbursement to the City of Golden Valley in October 2012.

Project Description

The BCWMC, in cooperation with the City of Golden Valley, stabilized and restored the channel of the Bassett Creek Main Stem from the Golden Valley-Crystal boundary to Regent Avenue in Golden Valley. The project included:

  • Stabilizing eroding banks to improve water quality;
  • Preserving natural beauty in the Briarwood Nature Area;
  • Preventing future channel erosion along the Bassett Creek Main Stem to reduce its negative water quality impact on downstream water bodies; and,
  • Enhancing the natural setting in the Briarwood Nature Area by revegetating the eroded areas with native vegetation that will create or restore habitat for native birds and animals.

The project reduced the overall pollutant load to the Bassett Creek Main Stem by an estimated amount of 96 pounds of phosphorous per year and 200,000 pounds of total suspended sediment per year.
